    About Brian Beaton

    Dr. Brian Beaton is Director of the Center for Expressive Technologies (CET) and a professor in Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts, where he helps coordinate the new STS Program and teaches across multiple departments. Beaton did his graduate work at NYU and the University of Toronto, where he trained in the acclaimed Technoscience Research Unit. Before coming to Cal Poly in 2015, Beaton was a professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, where he ran the Sara Fine Institute for Interpersonal Behavior and Technology (2013-2015), co-directed the Community Informatics Research Group, and co-directed the digital humanities faculty research network.  

    Beaton’s expertise includes new and emerging media, network technologies, digital tool creation, data sharing, communications, design, and the history and future of information systems. His funded projects include work on citizen science, crowdsourcing platforms, entertainment technologies, data portals, information science, and gaming. During the past 36 months, Dr. Beaton was a research fellow at the UNLV Center for Gaming Research as well as a research fellow at the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) investigating game design strategies and immersive media.

    Beaton writes and speaks widely on new and emerging technologies, as well as on information sharing, creativity and innovation challenges in science, industry, government,  and the nonprofit sector.
